The Story:
Nothing works on the stage like a well-crafted tale, and OLIVER! is just such a show. Based on the Charles Dickens classic novel, OLIVER! follows the orphaned boy Oliver from a workhouse to the streets of London. There he is picked up hungry and tired by The Artful Dodger who cheers him up and offers him companionship. The Dodger leads him to Fagin, a conniving career criminal who shelters homeless boys and teaches them to pick pockets for him. Oliver is sent out with the other boys on his first pick pocketing job, though he believes that they are going to teach him how to make handkerchiefs. The Artful Dodger robs Mr. Brownlow, a wealthy old man. However, it is Oliver who is arrested for the crime although he is eventually cleared of all wrong doing and is taken in by the kindly Mr. Brownlow. The once ragged Oliver is now a well-tailored, well-cared for little lad. Afraid that Oliver will give away the location of their hideout to the police, Fagin and a burglar, Bill Sykes, decide to kidnap Oliver. Fagin and Sykes dispatch Nancy, Sykes’ girlfriend, to get Oliver back. She does so but with deep regret as she has taken a liking to Oliver and treats him like her own child. Nancy, terrified for Oliver and feeling guilty, visits Brownlow and promises to deliver Oliver to him if Brownlow does not bring the police or ask any questions. Bill suspects that Nancy is up to something. He follows her and kills her, then runs off with Oliver. Finding the murdered Nancy, the police give chase and Sykes is shot dead. Oliver is restored to his benefactor, Mr. Brownlow. Fagin, now without boys, home or money, considers straightening up his life.
